Abstract

In this paper, a stacked MMIC power amplifier in GaAs pHEMT technology is designed for Ku-band operation. The amplifier exploits series power combination among three transistor stages, thus benefiting from the reduced output impedance transformation ratio compared to an equivalent parallel structure. An extremely compact stacked layout is obtained, which influences the choice of custom-designed transistors interconnections and interstage matching networks. The simulated performance of the PA, whose experimental characterization is ongoing, exhibits saturated output power of 32.9 dBm and corresponding gain and drain efficiency of 12.9 dB and 40 %, respectively, at 15 GHz.
