Abstract

Suggests that violence seems more frequent among psychotic than nonpsychotic or healthy people. Although some social factors are important, the psychotic illness may contribute directly to violence. In particular, psychotics acting on delusional beliefs appear more likely to commit serious violence than more rationally motivated psychotics. Studies of the occurrence of violence among psychotics are reviewed, and the characteristics of potentially violent patients are described. It is suggested that an improvement in psychiatric services for psychotics is vital. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2012 APA, all rights reserved)
