Abstract

The authors show how submillimetre continuum observations may be used to investigate the physical conditions in both thermal and non-thermal extragalactic sources. Observations of a flare in 3C 273 have led to the development of a new model of compact radio sources. The authors have discovered a previously unknown, luminous thermal component in the far-infrared spectrum of NGC 1275 which is attributed to star formation fed by a cooling accretion flow.
