Abstract

The development of an interactive videodisc system for use by general practitioners and district nurses on the subject of “Cancer patients and their families at home” is described. It has been based on a survey of the educational needs of practitioners in this area and focuses on symptom relief and communication problems. The development of the desired content and educational approach and the software evolved to meet these needs is outlined. During the development of the programme formative evaluation supervised and analysed by BLITHE was carried out by general practitioners, nurses and therapists in London, the West Midlands and Devon. The majority of learners found the programme to be relevant, stimulating and convenient to use. The programme is now in use at a number of sites in Great Britain, and evaluation of its effectiveness as an educational resource continues.
