Abstract

Examines the major programme of local government research currently being funded by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister. Suggests that this programme is distinctively different from previous research, offering a unique opportunity for research on a wide front and over a significant period of time to inform policy and practice at national and local level. Argues that to fulfil this potential it will be necessary to tackle a number of methodogical problems and to co-ordinate the range of studies being commissioned by central government. More important still, if this research is to benefit local government rather than simply an additional burden, practitioners, policy makers and researchers will need to work together to develop new ways of disseminating and applying research findings.
