Abstract

This chapter presents a debate about the career implications of teleworking. Choice of the topic was prompted by numerous teleworking studies, both qualitative and quantitative, which uncovered a concern for the career implications of teleworking (Olson and Primps, 1984; Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology, 1995; Huws, 1997; Perin, 1998; Johnson, 1998). Teleworkers were expressing fears of being ‘out of sight, out of mind’ regarding career development opportunities because they were not physically present in the office; where they could communicate informally and socially, put in ‘face time’ and network. Indeed, Galpin and Sims (1999) found that many teleworkers deliberately go the office for these purposes.
