Abstract

This article focuses on two bodies of film in order to explore some features of the filmic encoding of colonial discourse in the period 1920-60, and its reframing as colonial nostalgia in the 1980s and 1990s. Key features of the amateur films of French colonialism, held in the web-based Cinémémoire archive of amateur film located in Marseille, France, are examined. The discussion then focuses on the figuring of colonial nostalgia in Mémoire d’Outremer (Claude Bossion, France, 1997, colour, 60 min.), which was made by the founder of the Circuit-court archive from films now held in the archive. The concluding remarks link the discussion of Bossion’s little-known film to the colonial nostalgia films that have been produced in France from the 1980s onwards.
