Abstract

The Phoenix Project is a partnership between Cardiff University and the University of Namibia (UNAM) to reduce poverty and promote healthier societies. The project is a Cardiff University Flagship Engagement Project. The “interactive learning” strand of the Phoenix Project is a collaboration that is building joint capacity and empowering staff and students in the effective use of technology for learning, to provide an innovative learning landscape for students within UNAM. Learning technologists from Cardiff University are collaborating with the Centre for Open, Distance and eLearning (CODeL) to directly address the transition of academic materials from print to digital (and the normalisation of learning technology) in an African context. This project focuses on empowerment in learning technology, developing and disseminating good practice, developing skills and supporting staff, while offering effective advice to effectively manage change. The presentation will reflect on 3 key TEL initiatives: DigiCap; Panopto; Community of Practice. The evaluation process will also be shared, including: session feedback; memos to self; general feedback from UNAM. Considering the digital literacy model (Beetham and Sharpe 2010), and subsequently JISC’s Digital Capability Framework, a Cardiff University project has been funded within the School of Pharmacy to develop a sustained approach to identifying, supporting and developing innovative learning through appropriate use of technology. An overview of the DigiCap project was delivered to UNAM staff, including an introduction to the JISC Digital Capability Framework and discovery tool. Investment has enabled a project team at Cardiff University to roll out Panopto, grounded in sound pedagogy, focused on the learning needs of the student and teaching activity of the educators. By discussing effective change management, strategies for adoption and discussing the use of video within HE, we will present our reflections and evaluations by UNAM staff. Building on communities of practice and social learning systems (Wenger 2000), Cardiff University has developed a Learning Technology Community of Practice (CoP). The CoP is helps Learning Technologists and Academics with their work through dialogue, practice sharing, and supports learning technologists who see themselves as agents of change (Challen 2015). By facilitating an initial CoP meeting within UNAM, we will present our reflections and evaluations by UNAM staff, including community developments within the institution. To successfully build joint capacity, and empower staff and students in the effective use of technology for learning within UNAM, sessions and workshops were held to raise awareness around modes of online engagement. These included JISC’s Visitors and Residents mapping process, mobile learning, online facilitation, and a series of consultations around transitioning distance learning delivery from print to digital.
