Abstract

This concluding chapter is concerned with both revisiting and consolidating key messages from the intervening chapters, which dealt with diverse but connecting themes about Children and Young People ‘Looked After’? Education, Intervention and the Everyday Culture of Care in Wales. The collection as a whole has offered the reader a broad and varied focus. It has considered the policy and practice landscape of Wales, and provided a unique insight into the lives of those in or connected to the care system in Wales. Moreover, the collection encapsulates a range of experiences, contexts and influences that reflect the diversity of children’s and young people’s lives. There can be a tendency to refer to children and young people in care as if they are a static, homogeneous group. In contrast, their individual characteristics, personalities, talents and abilities vary, as do their histories, circumstances, needs and relationships. As children and young people have told us, ‘I shouldn’t be labelled or underestimated just because I am “looked after”. I am not just a number, I am me’[1]. This collection has sought to reflect this diversity.
