Abstract

This chapter shows the potential contribution that voltage source converter-high-voltage direct current (VSC-HVDC) systems can have to enhance power system stability, in particular, through damping of power system oscillations. It presents two application examples to demonstrate the damping contribution capability of HVDC links, although the analysis can be extendable to HVDC grids of any size by considering the proper coordination. The first example considers the capability of offshore wind power generation connected onshore through an HVDC link to damp low-frequency oscillations (LFOs). A number of power system stabilizers that may be included in the power converter are compared. The focus of the second example is, through a simplified system representation, to use analytical and simulation tools to investigate the occurrence of subsynchronous resonance (SSR) in an onshore transmission system. Damping of SSR using submarine VSC-HVDC links is demonstrated through numerical simulations, with experimental results validating the proposed control scheme.
