Abstract

The media have been intimate environmental participants for a long time. The prevailing myth is that the printing press, telegraph, phonograph, photograph, cinema, telephone, wireless radio, television, and internet changed the world without changing the Earth. They brought fantasy, reality, and pleasure to users in equal measure, fostering participatory and happy societies. In reality, each technology has emerged by despoiling ecosystems and exposing workers to harm.
