Gross insertions and microinsertions are a cause of human inherited disease but have also occurred during vertebrate evolution. For both microinsertions and the insertion of transposable elements, mechanistic models that have explanatory value in the context of genetic disease are also useful to account for the nature and location of evolutionary insertions.
