Abstract

The Compulsory Purchase of the Olympic site in East London in 2005-2007 was a focus of scholarly interest at the time and in the run-up to the Games in 2012 (Raco and Tunney, 2009; Davis and Thornley, 2010). However, since then, focus within the urban studies literature has tended to be placed on exploring and interpreting the nature of and impacts of legacies materialising within and immediately around the Games site in the form of development and public open spaces. Although some businesses were relocated within the immediate surroundings of the site, many were dispersed further afield; one or two as far as northern England. Nine years have passed since the commencement of the site’s redevelopment, raising questions of how they fared and where/whether they became re-established, particularly given the intention articulated at the time of the CPO that relocation would not harm them. This paper argues that the experiences of firms in both relocating and adjusting following displacement are important legacies of the ‘regeneration Olympics’. It shows that they are telling of the relationship between regeneration processes of planning and urban design and attitudes toward industrial areas in East London and revealing too of gaps between strategic planning goals related to the CPO and lived realities of urban change.
