Abstract

IN March 2006, Sir Menzies Campbell defeated Simon Hughes and Christopher Huhne to win the Liberal Democrats' leadership contest, which had been occasioned by Charles Kennedy's resignation. Although Sir Menzies' victory was not entirely unexpected, the scale of it was somewhat greater than anticipated. This article examines not only the conduct of the leadership contest, and the extent to which the candidates campaigned primarily according to what they could offer in terms of personal qualities and strategic vision, rather than offering detailed policy pledges, it also compares the 2006 contest with previous Liberal and Liberal Democrat leadership contests, thereby placing Sir Menzies' victory in historical context.
