Abstract

This chapter reviews a selection of the books on poetics published in 2013 and 2014. Focusing primarily on those works which reflect explicitly on the problem of defining poetics, it begins by discussing Lyn Hejinian and Barrett Watten’s A Guide to ‘Poetics Journal’: Writing in the Expanded Field, 1982–1998, and in doing so relates their account of the ‘expanded field’ to two discussions of ‘hybrid poetics’, Lynn L. Wolff’s W.G. Sebald’s Hybrid Poetics: Literature as Historiography and Amy Moorman Robbins’s American Hybrid Poetics: Gender, Mass Culture, and Form. It then turns to the problems of self-reflection and self-instantiation, discussing first Vittorio Hösle’s Zur Gechichte der Ästhetik und Poetik, then John Arthos’s Gadamer’s Poetics: A Critique of Modern Aesthetics and Forest Pyle’s Art’s Undoing: In the Wake of a Radical Aestheticism, before addressing two very different engagements with Heidegger’s writings on poetry, David Nowell Smith’s account of the resources offered by his thought for a future poetics in Sounding/Silence: Martin Heidegger at the Limits of Poetics, and Charles Bambach’s interdisciplinary rethinking of the grounds of ethical life between philosophy and poetry in Thinking the Poetic Measure of Justice: Hölderlin–Heidegger–Celan. It ends by discussing the contribution to such a future poetics of Kevin McLaughlin’s Poetic Force: Poetry after Kant.
