Abstract

Radiative transfer models of galaxies using exponentially distributed stars and dust have been used extensively to interpret surface brightness inclination tests, galaxy colour gradients, localised extinction and the far infrared (FIR) emission. The Standard Model (SM) used has been obtained mainly from observations of our Galaxy (extinction measures to stars and IRAS). Within the SM the generally excepted values for the vertical z and radial r dust scalelengths are about 0.13 and 3.5 kpc respectively. In this paper we describe how we have tested the SM using the emission from cold dust as measured by COBE (DIRBE). We have created all sky 140 and 240μ surface brightness maps from the DIRBE annual averaged sky maps.
