Abstract

Previous studies have shown that articular cartilage grows by apposition from the articular surface driven by proliferation of a progenitor cell sub-population that resides in the surface zone. This study concentrates on identifying markers for this progenitor cell population. Cell surface receptors CD105 and CD166 are known markers of progenitor/stem cells in endothelial cells, bone marrow constituents as well as other tissues and have recently been reported within normal and osteoarthritc human articular cartilage 1,2. Notch 1, Delta and Jagged 1 and 2 are known to be expressed by stem/progenitor cells during various stages of limb development 3 . Localisation of these markers to progenitor cells in articular cartilage would enable selective isolation facilitating further characterisation of the chondroprogenitor.
