Abstract

Most of the studies that explore the effects of real time passenger information systems focus almost exclusively on urban areas. In this paper, based on the outcome of a before-and-after intervention study utilising a mobile real time passenger information system I explore the effects of provision of real time information in a rural setting. The results indicate that real time information had significant effect on the journeys of the participants. More specifically the provision of real time information has i) increased their perception of control over the journey, ii) improved their decision making, iii) decrease their perceived waiting time, iv) enabled them to utilise better their waiting time, v) improved their satisfaction towards the bus service and the operator, and vi) increased their willingness to pay for both the real time information and the bus service. These findings provide a step towards understanding the interplay between real time information, and the effects it has on rural passengers.
