Abstract

We present results from the first flight of the MAXIMA experiment. MAXIMA is a balloon-borne experiment optimized to map the CMB anisotropy over hundreds of square degrees with an angular resolution of 10'. The instrument consists of a Gregorian telescope with a 1.3 m primary mirror and a receiver housing a 16 element bolometer array cooled to 100 mK. Observations were made at 3 frequency bands centered on 150, 240, and 410 GHz. During the first flight MAXIMA mapped the sky over a region of 124 deg2 with 10' FWHM resolution. The resulting CMB power spectrum covers the range 36 <= l <= 785 and is consistent with the predictions of the inflationary adiabatic scenario and with a flat universe.
