Abstract

THESE observations to produce isophote maps of active regions were made using the 1.05 metre Cassegrain telescope of the Pic-du-Midi Observatory (altitude 2,862 m) and a helium-cooled Rollin1 detector of millimetre and submillimetre radiation. In order to define and select the passbands, provided for the three wavelength ranges by gaps in the rotational absorption spectrum of atmospheric water vapour, a set of interference filters was designed and constructed, following the methods of Ulrich2. Their passbands are shown in Fig. 1, measured with the polarizing submillimetre interferometer of Martin and Puplett3. Fig. 2 shows the combined effect of each filter and the atmosphere on radiation from black body sources transmitted through 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5 km of standard atmosphere equivalent. The curves show the absolute fluxes received at the telescope from the Sun through each passband, given an estimated mean brightness temperature of the Sun within each band.
