Abstract

TSH binds specifically to the TSH receptor present on the surface of thyroid follicular cells and consequently activates adenylate cyclase. It was not known, however, which of the two subunits of the TSH bound to the receptor. By covalently crosslinking TSH to its receptor and characterizing the product with antisera specific for either the a or B subunit of TSH, we have shown that the TSHB subunit but not the TSHa subunit crosslinks to the TSH receptor.
