Abstract

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a severely debilitating disease that affects 1% o f the Western population. In addition to suffering pain and deform ation o f joints, patients are also at a higher risk o f developing cardiovascular co-m orbidities and experience a lower life expectancy as a result, Evidence for a link between RA and cardiovascular disease (CVD) is overwhelm ing and the large RA -associated inflammatory burden is thought to be responsible for the developm ent o f such distal pathologies; inflam m atory m ediators characteristic o f RA cause injury to the endothelium ultim ately resulting in endothelial dysfunction, a precursor to CVD. Therefore the main aim o f this thesis w as to characterise the vascular phenotype o f a murine model o f RA. Secondary aims w ere to relate changes in vascular function to the extent o f experim ental arthritis and to explore causative m echanism s therein.
