Abstract

We present observations of singly, doubly and triply-deuterated metha- nol towards the low-mass protostar IRAS16293-2422. Comparison of the fractionation ratios derived for these species is a unique tool to understand the chemical processes that lead to their formation. The present observations are consistent with formation of methanol on grain surfaces if the atomic D/H ratio is 0.1 to 0.2.
