Abstract

Classroom silence, particularly of Asian EFL learners, is a perennial concern. Based on the results of a questionnaire survey on the use of silence by Japanese EFL learners, this study suggests practical pedagogical approaches and activities which reflect the participants' ideas. The material to be presented provides opportunities for both teachers and learners to reflect on their own and others' classroom interactional styles. The study also aims to explain the importance of material that promotes awareness of interactional and cultural aspects of communication and explores the central role of material as a mediator of classroom interaction.
