Abstract

The importance of nurses providing an individual with holistic care has been well documented. Over the last decade improving the care for the dying has also been highlighted. UK wide and Welsh specific initiatives have been put in place to address the key issues around providing appropriate care for the terminally ill. The literature review looked specifically at the psychosocial aspect of care needed for the individual. Themes through the literature highlighted the need for nurses to be comfortable with existentialism, communication and multidiscipline working. The review also clearly pointed out the need for quality research including randomised control trials to ensure the development of services for the terminally ill were clearly evidence based.
