Abstract

The UK coinage industry consists of a closed loop supply with new and used coins flowing between the public, retailers, banks, coinage distributors and the Royal Mint. The demand for coins in the UK is seasonal and wastage is often high, especially for the lower domination coins. Adapting the “Beer Game” to this industry has allowed us to investigate the co-operation and collaboration opportunities available to the industry to ease the burden on the Royal Mint.
