Abstract

The development of handwriting skills begins with early scribbling and gradually develops into more intentional formation of shapes, patterns and letters that have meaning. Handwriting readiness is dependent on a range of factors including the child’s early experiences, rate of maturity, cognitive, sensory and motor development. The introduction of formal handwriting instruction before a child has developed handwriting readiness skills may leave children feeling discouraged with their efforts and lead to poor handwriting habits impacting on future academic performance and self esteem. This article provides an overview of current evidence and practical strategies to develop handwriting readiness and pre-writing skills.
