Abstract

In the context of an ageing population, public sector cuts and the 'Red Tape Challenge', it seems appropriate to examine the relationship between the demands of the workplace and the private demands faced by carers. This paper offers an exploratory overview of law and practice, as far as we know, in relation to the position of carers in the workplace. It considers statutory employment rights, such as those contained in sections 57A-57B and 80F-80I of the Employment Rights Act 1996, and examines the potential impact of the Equality Act 2010 in this area.
