Abstract

During José María Heredia's first stay in Mexico (1819-1821), the poet's political ideas entered in crisis, leading to an ideological reorientation, from an affirmative attitude towards Spain and the Spanish colonies, towards an openly anti-Spanish position. The study argues that this change can be noticed clearly for the first time in a hitherto undocumented early version of the important poem 'Las sombras', published anonymously in Mexico in late 1821 and discovered by the author of the study. The scrutiny of the textual manifestations of the poet's ideological crisis in this and other contemporary poems suggests that it is about a gradual shift rather than a sudden revelation, which coincides chronologically with a series of biographical misfortunes. Apart from discussing the textual evidence and pinpointing this ideological shift, the study edits the newly found version, confronting it with the other two previously known versions.
