Abstract

Reports the findings from a study into initial decision-making under the interventionist model for youth justice introduced by the Crime and Disorder Act 1998, based on interviews with frontline decision-makers presented with hypothetical fact situations and asked what decision they would make in each situation and to explain their reasoning process. Considers the exercise of discretion in relation to both informal and formal measures and in determining offence gravity scores. Highlights differences in approach as between custody sergeants and inspectors. Suggests how greater consistency of outcome could be achieved.
