This paper builds upon the work of SFL scholars who have incorporated and modified Birmingham School Exchange Structure and illustrates how the further incorporation of intonation into the description of exchange structure allows us to describe the dynamics of text flow across a discourse. In the paper I closely examine two short texts: a cooperative dialogue between undergraduate students and competitive talk between political rivals. Consideration of the two extracts shows that a three-metafunctional coding of exchange structure incorporating prosody reveals (i) how prior moves predict and constrain following moves and (ii) how on a moment by moment basis speakers claim access to knowledge and position their rivals as having higher or lowered access to knowledge. I also argue that exchanges may signal the negotiation of affiliation as well as information and action.
