Abstract

In 1994 Anthony made one of those true but uncomfortable statements for which he is famous. Talking about what was then a new, contextual approach to the study of ancient painted pottery (where ancient pottery is treated as part of the ‘total material culture’ of a particular time or place) he noted that this approach had rescued this material (Protoattic painted pottery) from the art historians.
