Abstract

Quartzite pebbles from a polymict conglomerate deformed under amphibolite facies conditions occurring on Artfjället, Västerbotten, appear less deformed than subarkosic pebbles with up to 25% non-quartz minerals (principally feldspar). Compositional, volumetric and textural variables of a number of pebbles have been compared to the deformed pebble shape. It has been found that the grain-size measure of the material making it up is statistically the most useful independent variable for predicting the shape of a deformed pebble. The less deformed pebbles have a coarser grain-size and this negative correlation could be taken to indicate a contribution to the strain development of a grain-size sensitive deformation mechanism. Contrary to expectation mineral proportions proved to be poor predictors of the deformed shapes. A slight tendency exists for large pebbles to exhibit more deformed shapes; a trend confirmed at other widely spaced localities in the area.
