Abstract

ROMSA allows the directions of principal stresses (σ1 > σ2 > σ3) to be estimated from data consisting of orientations of fault planes and their associated slip directions. The calculations make use of the well-known compressional and dilatational quadrantal arrangement of potential σ1 and σ3 directions. In addition, σ1 and σ3 are constrained by the fact that these directions lie in different pairs of dihedra bounded by two planes which are perpendicular to the fault plane; the first containing the direction of the fault slip, the second perpendicular to the first. The two restrictions on principal stress orientation when considered simultaneous, allow stress axes to be located more efficiently and precisely than existing methods which take only the compressional and dilatational quadrants into account.
